Even on the greyest winter days, Amsterdam knows how to shine. When the sun goes down, the city lights up with color and creativity. The Amsterdam Light Festival turns the canals into a quiet, outdoor exhibition.
What is the Amsterdam Light Festival?
Each year, international artists create light installations across the city, all connected by one theme. The 2025–2026 edition focuses on “Legacy”, what we leave behind, as individuals and as a society. Some works reflect on major historical events, others on personal memories or traditions.
You’ll find over 20 installations along a marked route through the city’s canal district.
Walk the route at your own pace
- The full route is about 6.5 kilometers
- You can follow it on foot, using a map or the festival’s app
- The lights are switched on every evening after sunset
Tip: Bring a raincoat and wear good shoes. It’s a nice way to explore the city in your own time
Or see it from the water
If you prefer to stay dry, you can also see the route from a covered boat. There are different options available, from classic canal boats to small private tours with snacks and drinks.
Tip: Make sure to book in advance, especially on weekends.
Planning your visit
The festival runs from late November to mid-January. Whether you’re here for a weekend or staying longer, it’s an easy and atmospheric winter activity. A quiet way to experience the city after dark.
