Winter in Amsterdam? Bring your scarf, your gloves and and get ready to skate. Each year, as temperatures drop, ice rinks start to pop up around the city. Not just for tourists, but as part of a real Dutch tradition. And while New York may have Rockefeller glamour, Amsterdam offers something different. It’s smaller, more relaxed, and feels surprisingly local.
Here’s your short guide to where Amsterdammers skate. And why it might just beat Manhattan.
Museumplein Ice Rink (ICE*Amsterdam)
If you’re only visiting one rink, make it this one. Set in front of the Rijksmuseum, this open-air rink brings together families, couples and groups of friends. You’ll be skating with some of Amsterdam’s most iconic museums as your backdrop. It’s a great stop after exploring the nearby collections or strolling through the city’s south side.
- When: mid-November to early February
- Extras: Skate rental, glühwein, poffertjes
- Good to know: It gets busy in the afternoon. Mornings are usually quieter.

Rembrandtplein Ice Rink
Right in the heart of the city, this cozy rink turns Rembrandtplein into a festive winter spot. Surrounded by cafés and holiday lights, it’s a small but atmospheric place for a quick skate. After a successful return last year, the rink is back again this winter.
- When: December 1 to January 5
- Vibe: Central, cheerful, full of local energy

Jaap Edenbaan – For real skating
This one is for people who actually want to skate. Jaap Eden is a 400-meter outdoor ice track in the east of Amsterdam, surrounded by trees and a no-fuss winter vibe. It’s where locals go to train, practice or just enjoy a few peaceful laps. There’s also a smaller rink for beginners and children.
- When: October to March
- Vibe: Local, laid-back, authentic
- Tip: Check their website for public skating hours
- More info: jaapeden.nl
*Rental ice skates are available at all the rinks.
So… better than New York?
Let’s just say: it’s different. No skyscrapers. No big shows. But what you get instead is a cozy, down-to-earth winter experience. You’re not just skating in Amsterdam. You’re skating with Amsterdammers.
