Every five years, Amsterdam becomes the stage for one of the world’s most breathtaking maritime events: Sail Amsterdam. Hundreds of majestic tall ships and historic vessels glide into the city, transforming the harbor into a sea of sails and flags. It is a celebration of history, adventure, and Dutch seafaring tradition that you will not find anywhere else. Ready to experience it for yourself? Here’s your guide to making the most of Sail Amsterdam.
What is Sail Amsterdam?
Sail Amsterdam is Europe’s largest free nautical event. Since 1975, it has welcomed tall ships, naval vessels, and traditional Dutch sailing barges to the city. The highlight is the “Sail-In Parade,” when the ships sail into the IJ River in a spectacular procession. Over the following days, you can step aboard some of these ships, meet international crews, and enjoy music, performances, and food stalls along the waterfront. It feels like a living museum on the water, where maritime history comes alive in front of your eyes.
Where and When
The next edition of Sail Amsterdam takes place from 20 to 24 August 2025. For five days, the IJ waterfront in Amsterdam will be filled with ships, events, and visitors from all over the world. The main area stretches from the Eastern Docklands to the riverbanks opposite Central Station. It is easy to reach by foot, bike, or public transport. And the best part: entry is free.
Best viewing spots
Want the best views of these majestic ships? Here are some favorite locations:
- IJhaven – The main harbor where the largest tall ships are moored. It is lively and full of atmosphere.
- NDSM Wharf – Across the IJ, this creative hotspot offers wide views of the ships sailing in and out.
- Java Island & KNSM Island – Quieter areas where you can watch the ships glide past without the heavy crowds.
- From the water – For the most unique perspective, book a small boat or join a guided canal cruise. Watching the tall ships from the water is an experience you will never forget.
A tip from Dutch Tours
Sail Amsterdam is popular, so plan your visit early in the day and give yourself time to explore. Do not miss the evening, when the ships are illuminated against the Amsterdam skyline. It is truly magical.
Sail Amsterdam only happens once every five years. If you are visiting the Netherlands in 2025, this is your chance to be part of an unforgettable maritime celebration. Locals love it, and we are sure you will too.
